Reshaping the gum line, for a better smile or to save a tooth.

A short gum procedure that reveals more of a tooth, either to balance a gummy smile or to give a damaged tooth enough structure to be restored.

Two Objectives

Aesthetic and functional.

Aesthetic crown lengthening

For a gummy smile or uneven tooth heights, the gum line, and sometimes the underlying bone, is reshaped to reveal more of the natural tooth, for a balanced smile without changing the teeth themselves.

Functional crown lengthening

When a tooth is broken or decayed near the gum line, repositioning the gum and bone creates the space a crown or filling needs. This can make it possible to restore a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed.
As with any gum surgery, there may be some swelling and tenderness for a few days. Afterwards, teeth can look slightly longer and feel more sensitive, and small gaps can appear between teeth; these are discussed at your consultation.
