Specialist bone grafting and ridge augmentation in London

Rebuilding the foundation for healthy teeth and dental implants

Healthy bone is essential for supporting both natural teeth and dental implants. When bone is lost due to gum disease, tooth loss, infection or trauma, it can affect your oral health and limit future treatment options.

Bone grafting and ridge augmentation are regenerative procedures that can rebuild lost bone, creating a stable foundation for dental implants and long-term oral health. Dr Payvand Menhadji provides personalised treatment using evidence-based techniques to restore bone and support successful restorative care.

What It Is

What are bone grafting and ridge augmentation?

Bone grafting is a procedure that rebuilds areas of the jaw where bone has been lost. Ridge augmentation is a type of bone grafting that restores the natural shape and volume of the jaw following tooth loss.

Bone grafting and ridge augmentation can help:

  • Restore jawbone volume
  • Prepare the jaw for dental implants
  • Support long-term implant stability
  • Improve the natural contours of the jaw
  • Enhance both function and aesthetics

Every treatment plan is tailored to the amount of bone loss and your long-term treatment goals.

What causes bone loss?

Bone loss can occur for several reasons and often develops gradually over time.

Common causes include:

  • Tooth loss
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Dental infection
  • Trauma or injury
  • Developmental factors affecting the jaw

A comprehensive assessment helps determine the extent of bone loss and whether regenerative treatment is recommended.

When is bone grafting recommended?

Bone grafting may be advised when there is insufficient bone to support a dental implant or when rebuilding the jaw is necessary before restorative treatment.

Treatment may be recommended for patients who:

  • Are planning dental implants
  • Have experienced bone loss after tooth extraction
  • Have thin bone where an implant is planned
  • Have bone defects caused by periodontal disease
  • Require reconstruction of the jaw ridge

Bone regeneration for dental implants

Successful implant treatment depends on having enough healthy bone to support the implant securely.

In many cases, modern regenerative techniques can rebuild areas of bone loss, making implant treatment possible even when bone volume is limited. Depending on your needs, bone grafting may be carried out before implant placement or at the same time as implant surgery.

Advantages

Why rebuilding bone matters.

Restoring lost bone creates a stable, long-term foundation for dental implants and other restorations, and helps protect the teeth and tissues around it.

A stable foundation

Rebuilt bone volume gives future restorations, including implants, a secure base to rely on.

Preserves facial structure

Restoring lost bone helps maintain natural facial contours and jaw support.

Widens your options

Adequate bone volume can open up restorative options that limited bone would otherwise rule out.

Supports long-term stability

A well-integrated graft provides a durable foundation for years to come.

Ideal implant position

Enough bone allows the implant to be placed in the best position for the final tooth, which helps both appearance and cleaning.

Tailored to the defect

Regenerative techniques are tailored to the size and location of your bone loss.
The Procedure

What happens during treatment?

Treatment begins with a detailed consultation and assessment of your bone volume, gum health and restorative goals.

Treatment is planned using detailed imaging, usually a 3D (CBCT) scan. During the procedure, bone graft material is placed where bone has been lost, usually covered with a protective membrane, to guide new bone formation. Graft materials can come from your own body, from a donor, from animal sources (bovine or porcine) or be synthetic; the options, including any animal-derived materials, are discussed with you beforehand.

Healing and recovery

Bone regeneration is a gradual process that takes time.

Most patients experience mild swelling and discomfort for a few days. Healing time depends on the size of the graft: where the jaw is being prepared for implants, a healing period of around four to nine months is usual before implant placement. As with any surgery there are risks, such as infection or the graft not fully integrating, which are discussed at your consultation.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a dental bone graft?
A dental bone graft rebuilds areas of the jaw where bone has been lost or where additional support is needed before treatments such as dental implants.
Will I always need bone grafting before dental implants?
No. Bone grafting is only recommended if there is insufficient bone to support the implant securely.
How long does bone grafting take to heal?
Smaller grafts placed at the same time as an implant heal alongside it. Larger grafts usually need around four to nine months before an implant can be placed.
Is ridge augmentation the same as bone grafting?
Ridge augmentation is a specific type of bone grafting that restores the shape and volume of the jaw after bone loss.
Can bone be rebuilt after tooth loss?
Yes. Modern regenerative techniques can often rebuild lost bone and improve the foundation for future restorative treatment.
Is bone grafting painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, and most patients experience only mild discomfort during recovery.
Why should I see a Specialist Periodontist?
A Specialist Periodontist has advanced expertise in bone regeneration and periodontal surgery, helping to achieve predictable, stable and long-term treatment outcomes.
